I can think of workarounds, but your team is going to need ground rules to make either work.
1. Use checklist items to assign the sub tasks. Last person to check off their sub task changes the Progress to Completed.
2. Use labels to assign tasks. Last person to complete their sub task changes Progress to Completed.
You could also do this with buckets, but wow, that would really push your team to a low-res information radiator...
