'Update your sign-in technology before September 16th, 2024 to maintain email access'.
Thank you very much for your video.
So if I understanded correctly, MS are forcing users onto a subscription service to continue to use Outlook on desktop. Office/outlook365 and instead of using desktop based storage i.e. PST and OST file archives in favour of less secure cloud based storage. Thanks.

For Desktop users, Outlook supports Modern Authentication in all current Microsoft 365 subscription SKUs and Outlook 2021 LTSC (any SKU with build 11601.10000 or higher).
Modern Authentication is not supported if your Outlook is configured to connect to Outlook.com using POP/IMAP or SMTP.
Option 1: Get a new Outlook Email App
Option 2: Instead of using POP/IMAP and SMTP, create a new Outlook Desktop profile. Create an Outlook profile - Microsoft Support

Teresa_Cyrus Hello: Thank you for your comments. I'm hoping for some information. If I link my outlook.com email accounts in Outlook 2021 as "Outlook Exchange" I believe that creates a OST file (correct me if I'm wrong). I could then use the Exchange accounts to store the emails in the OST file on my PC while meeting the the modern authentication requirements. IS that correct?

Your question: If I link my outlook.com email accounts in Outlook 2021 as "Exchange" I believe that creates a OST file (correct me if I'm wrong). If I move to Exchange accounts can I store the emails in the OST file on my PC while using the modern authentication?
Confirmed response from Microsoft:
Going forward, the only way to add Outlook.com accounts to Outlook 2021 will be as Exchange accounts. After basic auth is deprecated (Sept. 16), there will not be a way to add Outlook.com accounts as POP or IMAP. Outlook 2021 does not support modern auth for POP or IMAP for Outlook.com. Exchange accounts connect with modern auth and use an OST to store the data, so that is correct. (Confirmed by Microsoft)

#traccreations4e 8/1/2024- grape477Aug 12, 2024Copper ContributorHello Teresa. You may have missed my previous post. I have emails directed to my Outlook 2021 on my PC from a local Internet Service Provider. The company name is Shaw. They are connected as POP accounts. Will they continue to work past Sept. 16 and the MS change to two step verification?

- grape477Jul 28, 2024Copper ContributorWith the recent problem with the CrowdStrike Outage, Companies and Governments are reassessing Risks of Using Cloud storage. I don't like the idea that we may have store our email on the cloud. MS needs to come up with a way to store our emails on our own computers (locally).

MMany thanks for the above. On my desktop I use Microsoft 365 subscription based. Outlook for desktop includes both Outlook.com accounts, using Exchange and Gmail accounts using SMTP. AFAIK they can not use Exchange.
Question: how am I supposed to proceed?
Allow me to ask one further question.
What am I supposed to do with the Outlook app on Android? Will that automatically be updated?
Thank you.

You can create a new profile since your desktop already has a Microsoft 365 subscription.
Instead of using POP/IMAP and SMTP settings, create a new Outlook Desktop profile and then add your Outlook.com account using automatic account configuration, which will add the account with Modern Authentication. To do this, please use the following guidance:-
Create a new Outlook Desktop profile. For more information, please go to Create an Outlook profile.
-
Add your Outlook.com account. For more information, please go to Add an email account to Outlook.

Teresa_Cyrus Thanks. Sorry, but I am not sure, will this address the matter of Gmail and SMTP in Microsoft 365?

Ok thanks for clarification.
So as I see it options are.
1. Pay full price for Outlook 2021, which maybe end if life 2025.
2. Subscribe to outlook365 ($70 a year) with Cloud storage for personal emails or
3. Use the Outlook free app with Ads.
4. Drop MS hotmail after 25 years with ad free subscription and move to another mail server.
Thanks for taking the time to reply!
- kadams311Aug 02, 2024Copper ContributorI love how your replies are actually telling us the truth. 😎
Microsoft has been gradually doing everything in its power to force longtime users to give them more money, regardless of how every computer we've bought for over 20 years was profiting them by bundling in the MS OS and other products.
Not long ago I had to help my 87 year old dad clear out a bunch of his Onedrive and Hotmail storage space, as he was understandably confused by their failure to function--MS had suddenly adopted a new policy with how it was parsing out cloud storage.
Real classy, Microsoft! I'd rant some all caps profanities at you if I didn't fear you'd find some way to further hobble any dissenters to your greedy overreaching. 😡- kadams311Aug 02, 2024Copper ContributorJust to clarify from my own POV, as this MS Admin seems to not care that people might not be able to afford to pay--many users want to know that important or nostalgic messages from two decades ago, as saved via hotmail accounts, will always be there for them.
This user response seems to summarize things aptly. The gist is MS is telling us we can go F ourselves.

good thing my gmail still works so I could get my verification code to sign in to this account to give you a "like" 🙂
Gmail addressed the 3rd party issue years ago with a dedicated password for each email account that I have to use with Outlook 2019 (FREE BY WAY, just search google!!!!!) . At least buy the retail version of Outlook, and only pay once. Anyone who pays for a 365 subscription is throwing their money away yearly when it's really just a gimmick to charge you money so you don't have to figure another way yourself to get your emails!!!!- lmarshall32Sep 26, 2024Copper Contributor
abycs it’s now after 16 Sept. How do I update?
- Teresa_CyrusJul 11, 2024MVP
There is a basic plan for 1.99 per month with no ads and more storage.
Also, Outlook 2025 is rolling out soon. This version will not get ongoing feature updates.
As a friendly reminder MS has seen an increase of hacked accounts and want to protect your personal data.
I hope this helps.

This is just another MS money grabbing event, and of my 9 email addresses, only 2 are live.ca, and I only use them when I'm dealing with someone I don't trust anyway, so I'll take option number 4 above and just DUMP both of my MS emails and keep my money!!!!! 365 has always been a money grab and way overpriced 😞
