Separating automatically synced contacts to a personal contacts folder under My Contacts

I'm noticing personal contacts from my iphone are automatically ending up in my contacts folder.  When I tried "New Contact Group" I created a "Personal" group.  Then, when I tried to select those contacts, they don't show up in my contacts to select from even though when I back out of the process I can clearly see them in my contacts list.
