Recall email sent using the Sharepoint share feature
Accidentally shared a site via Sharepoint to a group. In Outlook on the web, in my Sent folder, the message appears as if I had sent it from Outlook. I used the 'Recall message' button on the ribbon and selected 'Only recall this message'. I don't knoew what is expected normal response after clicking OK in this window, but it simply closed the window and nothing else changed. It makes wonder if an email sent this way cannot be recalled?
Emails sent by the SharePoint sharing feature cannot be recalled. What you experienced is normal behavior.
Even though the message appears in your Sent Items and Outlook shows the Recall this message button, SharePoint sharing emails are system generated and not true Outlook sent messages. Because of that, Exchange does not allow them to be recalled.
When you clicked Recall and the window simply closed:
- No recall message was sent
- No error is shown
- Nothing changed for recipients
This is expected, although confusing.
It is also important to note that even if recall did work, it would not remove the SharePoint permissions.
The correct fix is to:
- Go to the SharePoint site
- Open Settings > Site permissions
- Remove or change the group’s access, or delete the sharing link
- Optionally send a correction email to the recipients
In summary, SharePoint generated sharing emails cannot be recalled and access must be managed directly in SharePoint.
Microsoft Support Documentation, message recall only works if both sender and recipient use Microsoft 365/Exchange in the same organization and the message is a normal Outlook email.
