Outlook inbox double click to open a unread not working

Hello

I work in an office where we work from assigned inboxes. Everyone has it set up that you have to double click on an email to open it (so that no one opens one accidentally). I also have this set up for which is working. HOWEVER, when i click ONCE on an unread, go to do something else, and go back to it, it has opened it! Can someone please advise as people in the office will start getting annoyed with me and i'm new 🥹😭. Thank you!

Please enable the reading pane (to the left or bottom), so that with 1 click, the email can be previewed.  and with double click, the email will be openned in a new window.  Hence, with 1 click, you can me an unread mail to read.

If the reading pane is not enabled, then with single click, the email opens.  Not with double click.

    Hope this helps.

    Hello,
I came across your post since i had same issue i made some research. If you are using New Outlook, then this behavior cannot be disabled - this behavior of single click to open mail is actually a feature of the "New Outlook" and cannot be disabled (trust me, looked all over the settings :) You can select messages without opening them by using CTRL + left-click on the message, but this will just select the message, not what you are looking for. IF you prefer double clicking to open the message then i would recommend switching back to the Classic Outlook by toggling switch to Classic at the top right corner of your Outlook window. Classic Outlook has double-clicked to open as a default functionality i believe. Hope that helps! :)
