Outlook & required 2 step authentication / Google deadline

Hi I have Outlook 2010 and am getting conflicting information about using newer versions with GOOGLE's new required 2 step auth. to connect to GMAIL.  First I am considering upgrade to Outlook 2016 but I am hearing it is NOT 2 step compliant, others say it is IS compliant, others say upgrade to Outlook 2019 what is correct here?   ALSO, if I have outlook 2010 can I just switch to 2 step in google and then generate an APP pw and be good to go without upgrading at all?  What is correct here, thanks.
