New Outlook - Messages stay "unread" even after double click
In the Old Outlook Desktop I had the option to keep messages UNREAD untill I clicked twice to open them. The new outlook does not seem to support this option. I tried the option: "Weergeven item...

Today I still experience the same behavior. I tried all options but none works as expected. It seems to me that Microsoft thinks everybody answers mails directly in the inbox (which a lot of my collegues do). However I really prefer to keep control and open my e-mails one by one.
I want mails to remain unread when I select them in the inbox and do nothing but quickly read. When I really want to do something with the e-mail I open it by double clicking. Today I still have my e-mails "unread" although I double clicked, replied etc.

You need to set the last option - "Don't automatically mark items as read"
The "normal" or "expected" behavior when opening a message in a new window (or replying) is to mark it read but in new Outlook opening in a new window does not mark as read, only replying will when it's set to "Don't automatically mark items as read".

Yes, I have the same. This seems to be by design. Pity. If only the old setting option "mark as read once opened or double clicked" would still be there, all would be well.

Yes, it works (I seem to remember trying this setting before without results). Thank you.

Update, does not work anymore today: Double click to open and just "read" the e-mail (no forward, no reply ...) --> mail stays "unread". Not the behaviour I want.

That is how it worked for me when posted earlier - opening or using the reading pane is not marked as read when the option is set to not mark as read. You'll need to manually mark it - either click the bar on the left or right click and choose mark as read to mark read. Or change the mark as read options to mark after 5 seconds (or one of the other options).
I don't know if it is a bug or by design that opening a message in new Outlook or outlook web will as mark as read, but will ask support.
