New Mail Icon not being displayed

A few weeks ago I noticed that the "New Mail" envelope icon was not being displayed on the Outlook icon on my task bar.  The Outlook option in the Message Arrival section has the box checked for "Show an envelope icon in the taskbar".  How do I get the envelope icon back?

    try not to open outlook from shortcut open it from start menu

      Sorry, but nothing changed. I closed Outlook and restarted from the Start menu. I sent myself an email from a Gmail account of mine. I waited for the "new mail" tone but still no envelope icon.
