MS Outlook connection to gmail via IMAP

I believe it replaced the app password requirement classic Outlook/Google used to have in place. Now with most new accounts added in classic/new Outlook, most will require the browser login. Yahoo, AOL, Gmail have this setup now. Cable company emails don't have it yet or most domained email with IMAP (bluehost, hostgator, netsol).
I don't think you can get around this as it was a security update.
Google (Gmail) says you don't need to.
