How will the Sepetmber 16th changes to Outlook sign in procedure affect me

Tech info
Using two separate licensed copies of Office 2016, one on a Dell Laptop (W10 Home) the other on a Lenovo Desktop (W10 Homew). Outlook version is:
Microsoft® Outlook® 2016 MSO (Version 2406 Build 16.0.17726.20078) 32-bit .
Set up
Outlook is used as client to access outlook.com emails set up to use POP3. Laptop set to leave copies of emails on the Outlook.com server; Desktop removes emails from the Outlook server when they are collected and stores them on its SSD as a PST file. PST file backed up to local external HDD and a cloud location.
Gap in MS info
MS info found from following links to the MS message says that Outlook 2016 MSI is not compatible with the new requirements but does not mention Outlook 2016 MSO. Elsewhere MS says that Outlook 2016 is already set to use the new authentication methods by default. Other comments on this change suggest that it will no longer be possible to use POP3 though it might be provided with the 'new' Outlook App(?) at some unspecified time in the future.
Queries
So it is unclear how/if I can download and back up emails (PST files) after September 16 and whether I need to replace or just reconfigure my Outlook 2016 MSO programs.
Help and clarity gratefully received.
