How to stop conversation threads from automatically expanding in the inbox
samsgc For anyone looking to resolve this issue, as I was having the same problem, I went to settings->mail->then in Layout I selected "Show email grouped by conversation" and under "Arrange the reading pane" I selected "Newest on top." Previously, I had selected "Show each message separately" which was causing things to automatically drop down. This applies to the new/updated Outlook.
The above is largely for old outlook. For New Outlook, the Flow is as follows: View -> Mail -> Layout -> "Message Organization" -> "How do you want your Message List organized" and select "Group messages by branches within conversations". This will stop the annoying auto-expand issue in your inbox!

In terms of the correct labels now (previous poster must have been using an older version of Outlook), I have navigated and applied exactly these instructions (set to: "Group messages by branches within conversations").
Testing shows that some grouped conversations remain collapsed and others STILL EXPAND AUTOMATICALLY so quite bizarre behaviour and I cannot work out why.- spainmeJan 15, 2026Copper Contributor
OMG I finally worked it out!
Change your Reading pane to "Show all messages from selected conversation". This will
- stop the left panel from expanding
- show the mail-trail in your reading pane
