Change the recurrence on an appointment

I would like to change recurrence of an appointment on my calendar. When I double click and I click open entire series, the recurrence button is not available. It is there if I hit a single appointment, even if it is part of a series, but it will not allow me to change a single appointment in a series.

Does anyone know how to fix this?
