Cannot change password in setup for Microsoft Mail.

I received a new laptop with Windows 11. The info I enter info in setup for Microsoft Mail it is not being held. That is, when Mail setup is accessed the password field has a 16-place array of dots.  I can overwrite this with my password but it will not save.
