Tag search not showing all photos
Hi!
When i search for a picture with a tag the result is only showing a few pictures.
I have around 1000 photos with this tag. I tried with and without hash sing. Both is not working.

I am seriously considering to move to Google-Photos.
The Photo-App is complete crap. Looks like some fifth-grader tried to write his first code.
Same with OneDrive.
All indexes gone.
No AI search.

Moaning doesn't help anyone, especially not yourself. Suggested solutions or general suggestions always help. For your information, I am not an employee of Microsoft or associated with them in any way, other than that I am a user like you who just wanted to help. If the solution approach didn't help you, just ignore it, that's completely sufficient.

Here are some possible reasons for this issue and steps you can take to resolve it:
1. Check OneDrive Indexing
- Indexing Delay: If you recently tagged or uploaded the photos, there might be a delay in OneDrive indexing these tags for search. Wait a little while and try searching again.
- Refresh OneDrive: You can try to force OneDrive to re-index the files by restarting the OneDrive app or logging out and back in again.
2. Check Tagging Method
- Consistent Tagging: Ensure that the tags are consistently applied across all the photos. Sometimes tags might be added in different ways or formats (e.g., using capital letters in some tags and lowercase in others), leading to inconsistent search results.
- Using the Right Metadata Field: Verify that you are tagging the photos correctly. Sometimes, tags added in certain photo management tools may not be recognized as search tags by OneDrive.
3. Use Different Search Methods
- Search Syntax: Try searching for the tag without the hash sign (#) or other special characters. OneDrive search might treat the hash as a separate character and not part of the tag.
- Search by File Properties: Instead of using tags, try searching by other properties like the file name, date, or other metadata to see if the photos appear.
4. Clear OneDrive Cache (On Desktop App)
- If you are using the OneDrive desktop app, clearing the app's cache might help in resolving search issues. However, there's no direct option to clear the cache within OneDrive, so you may need to sign out and sign back in to reset its cache.
5. Use OneDrive Web Interface
- Web vs. App Search: Sometimes, the OneDrive app might not display search results as effectively as the web version. Try performing the search directly from the OneDrive web interface to see if the results differ.
6. Ensure OneDrive is Up to Date
- Make sure your OneDrive app is updated to the latest version. Microsoft frequently updates OneDrive, and a newer version may fix issues related to search functionality.
7. Check for Sync Issues
- Ensure all files are fully synced between your device and OneDrive. Sometimes, unsynced files may not appear in search results.
- You can check the sync status by clicking the OneDrive icon in the system tray (Windows) or menu bar (Mac).
8. Search on Another Device
- If possible, try accessing OneDrive and searching for the tags on another device. This can help determine if the issue is device-specific.
9. Check File Formats
- Ensure that the files you're searching for are supported by OneDrive's search function. Some file formats may not support tags, or the tags may not be recognized properly.
10. Contact Microsoft Support
- If none of the above solutions work, consider contacting Microsoft Support for assistance. Provide them with specific details about the tags and search issues you're experiencing.
Summary
By following these steps, you should be able to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue with OneDrive not showing all photos tagged with a specific term. If the problem persists, it may be related to a bug or limitation in OneDrive's search functionality, which Microsoft Support can help address. The text and steps were edited with the help of AI.

NikolinoDE - I AM on the web version, I have tousands of pictures with mountains and OneDrive find 16! I have a beard 10 years and when I search for "beard" OneDrive find NOTHING. Also when I search for a region, I search for "Schweiz" (the most photos are taken in Switzerland) => 12 results, search for "switzerland" => 0 results. Sardinien => 4 results (there are also over 500 pics from Sardinia in my photo folder.
Is this that magic AI where Microsoft always talking about????- ThomasSteinerCopper Contributor
I completely agree with you.
Compared with google photos this is pathetic. Its incredibly easy to use googles app. Intuitive and fast. People are recognized as well - and all in a snap.
There are so many posts about the utter lack of functionality in finding photos in OneDrive and complicated tricky so called solutions - its hard to bear. If this is how MS implements AI then I sincerely doubt how serious they are about it.
Its so much more frustrating, since I am willing to use the MS-Apps and I have the strong impression that they absolutely don't care.
