Teams defaults to expired account

Good point. Replace the word "Desktop" with "Mobile." Question still stands though, are you using the standalone application or are you going to the website?
I'm guessing the application since navigating browsers in tablets is annoying, but try a browser in incognito mode and see whether you're able to sign in with your active account. Unless the active one and the defunct one use the same username/email, you should be ok, and you can wait for MS to fix Teams Desktop/Mobile/Gameboy Color. I wouldn't hold my breath.
