I am not sure about on a Mac but in the windows there is an option in settings to disable GPU hardware acceleration. Not exactly a fix for the battery issue but may help. Click on your photo in top right, click settings and its under General(on Windows)

This actually worked! Thank you!! I didn't expect to find a setting, so I was rushing to report it.
This significantly lowers the burden on battery - hours!! - it should be set by default to be off - I don't understand why it's on - at least on MacBook's with switchable graphic it should be off for sure, the integrated graphics are more than enough for video calls etc.
