Link from email launches Teams in browser instead of the app

I have a Microsoft surface pro. My cousin sent me an email (via gmail) with a link to join Teams. When I click on the link, it opens in google browser instead of the App.  There is no mention of opening in app instead of browser. When I open the Teams app, it tells me to click on the link from the email. It also has a button that says sign up for Teams. When I click it opens in Edge browser, and I attempt to sign in, and then it brings the "You're not on Teams yet, sign up for Teams, or check email for link to start using.

What do I need to do differently?
