Moving from grandfathered E1 SKU to Business SKU

I just took over being the M365 administrator for my Little League, and it has a grandfathered E1 SKU. This E1 SKU has 300 free web users. I have a few questions:

  1. I can't seem to figure out how to get the QR code for the 2FA. I have Authenticator installed. Everything I have tried doesn't work. How can I get that?
  2. It doesn't seem like this SKU has the ability to forward emails outside our domain. I know where to go in Defender to update the rule, but it doesn't seem to 'stick.'
  3. If I convert from the E1 to the Business SKU, does the Business SKU allow for 300 free web-only users, or is it limited to just 10 free?

Thanks!

  • Hello BNLL_UIC

Thanks for your questions! Responses are in-line below:

    1. I can't seem to figure out how to get the QR code for the 2FA. I have Authenticator installed. Everything I have tried doesn't work. How can I get that?
      1. To set-up 2FA, follow the steps in this article: Set up an authenticator app as a two-step verification method - Microsoft Support

    2. It doesn't seem like this SKU has the ability to forward emails outside our domain. I know where to go in Defender to update the rule, but it doesn't seem to 'stick.'
      1. For this scenario, I recommend contacting Microsoft Support via the Microsoft 365 admin center so you can get connected to a technical support representative for direct assistance.

    3. If I convert from the E1 to the Business SKU, does the Business SKU allow for 300 free web-only users, or is it limited to just 10 free?
      1. It depends on which Business SKU you want to switch to. Check out this article that outlines what each Microsoft 365 Business plan offers, and which of those offer a grant. Compare Microsoft 365 Nonprofit Plans
      2. I recommend checking if you're eligible for any grants or discounts. You can review the criteria on Nonprofits Grants & Credits Eligibility and then click Register now at the bottom of the page to do an eligibility pre-check or apply for nonprofit grants and discounts.
      3. However, since you're an existing customer, I also recommend contacting Microsoft Support via the Microsoft 365 admin center to get accurate pricing information if you're looking to switch plans.

    Hope that helps!

    Thanks,
