Personal Account Fails Only on PCs with a Single Copilot App
I've spent several days investigating a personal-account switching issue across four Windows computers and have found a consistent pattern.
Symptoms
On some computers, when I attempt to switch from my school/work account to my personal Microsoft account in Copilot:
- Copilot appears to close.
- It appears to attempt to open another Copilot experience.
- The same Copilot application reopens.
- My personal Copilot account never becomes accessible.
My school/work account continues to function normally on all systems.
Systems where personal account works
- Tablet with both Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot installed.
- Home PC with both Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot installed.
Result:
- Personal account works normally.
- Work account works normally.
Systems where personal account fails
- Home PC with only Copilot installed (version 156).
- Office desktop with only Copilot installed (version 157).
Result:
- Work account works normally.
- Personal account fails consistently.
Additional observations
- The issue occurs on both versions 156 and 157.
- The same personal Microsoft account is being used.
- The same work/school account is being used.
- Different computers and different networks have been tested.
- Version number alone does not explain the issue.
- The strongest correlation appears to be whether a separate Microsoft 365 Copilot application is present.
Working hypothesis
Computers that still have both Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot may be handling the work/personal account transition differently from computers that have only the unified Copilot experience.
An interesting detail is that on systems where only one Copilot application is installed, switching to the personal account appears to trigger an attempt to open another Copilot experience, but no second Copilot application exists. The system then returns to the same Copilot application and the personal account remains inaccessible.
Has anyone else compared systems that have both applications versus systems that expose only a single Copilot app?
I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has both working and non-working systems available for comparison.
Personal thanks to Microsoft Copilot in assistance with this problem.

Your four-PC comparison is useful evidence, but the presence of a second app is still a correlation rather than a confirmed requirement. Microsoft's current Copilot update guidance describes switching between personal and work accounts within the updated app, with their data kept separate.
Compare the complete installed product names and versions on a working and failing PC; the shared Copilot label alone can obscure which application handles the account transition. Confirm that each installation has its available official updates.
Next, test the same personal Microsoft account in a private browser session. If that works while the desktop switch loops, preserve screenshots of the sequence and test the app's Repair option in Windows Settings, if available.
Report the paired working/failing configurations through Microsoft support, including versions 156 and 157 and the reopening behavior. Avoid presenting installation of a second app as a verified fix until that change has been tested independently.
