How do I turn off Copilot in Word documents?
SOLUTION
All solutions I found here did not work for me. So finally I got in contact with MS support by chat. And for me (Word, on Mac) was the solution simple: delete the new (and expensive! - E. 99,-) subscription and change it for Ms. CLASSIC version, that one is without copilot and costs less (E.69,-).
Of course this option was never clearly communicated by Ms. One disadvantage: you will lose copilot completely, you cannot turn it on again in this version.

Boot Word
Click FILE (upper left of screen)
Click OPTIONS (lower left of screen)
Click CoPilot (see below)
Clear the box labelled "Enable CoPilot"
Reboot Word, and the CoPilot icon and aggravating delays are gone.
If you ever want to use CoPilot, check the same box and reboot to enable it.
I think MicroSoft got the message.

Thank you! Tried to find a way to turn this accursed thing off since months ago and that wasn't an option. So happy to read your comment!

I meant the latest version of Word. Word>File>Options does not appear.

Make sure all documents are closed first, but Word app stays open. In desktop 365 (Personal subscription), the Copilot submenu only became visible for me in File>Options once all documents were closed. If a document was open it was not visible in the File>Options menu.
