How do I turn off Copilot in Word documents?
- Open MS Word
- Navigate to the File tab
- Scroll all the way to the bottom, and select Options
- Select the Copilot
- Deselect the Enable Copilot selection box
- Select OK
- Close MS Word
- Restart your computer
- Open MS Word, and it should be gone

So easy! Thank you. Copilot just started to offer suggestions above the page when I opened Word which was a step too far.

Are you on PC? Are you on Mirosoft 365 Personal plan? What build number are you using please? Are you referring to options visible in desktop Word or visible in web Word, or both please? Thanks.

Go to Word >> Preferences >> Copilot. By default it is enabled. Uncheck and restart Word.

HI. There is NO "Enable Copilot" selection box to deselect. All I have is this. What am I doing wrong? I have Office 65

When I get to options, there is no option to select CoPilot. It also doesn't appear when I look under autocorrect options as was suggested by... ironically... CoPilot in my search engine.

Unfortunately, these instructions do not apply to all Word users.
People who use the subscription-based plans like Microsoft 365 Personal do not have an "Options" tab under their "File" tab. I know because I'm one of those people. And from what I've read, the only way to get rid of Copilot is to downgrade to a plan that doesn't have Copilot.
Here's what is says on a recently updated https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/switching-to-microsoft-365-personal-and-family-classic-plans-58342e83-38e7-4cda-b63b-88604a8fb7ef:
"Starting January 16, 2025, Microsoft 365 Personal and Family plans worldwide will include Microsoft Copilot and Microsoft Designer. As an existing Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscriber, you will automatically get access to Copilot in apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote when you update to the latest version. Existing subscribers with recurring billing enabled can switch to other plans without Copilot or AI credits like Microsoft 365 Basic, or, for a limited time, to our new Microsoft 365 Personal Classic or Microsoft 365 Family Classic plans."
I'm putting this out there in the hopes that it helps other folks who use the 365 subscription products.

Good news even for those with 365 personal
the January 2025 update does now include the “disable co-pilot” option on the setting so after updating Word on both desktop and laptop I am now copilot free
BUT on the app on iPad, I can’t find how to do it as it doesn’t have a host of settings to fix. Anyone managed that yet?

What that DOESN'T remove, however, is the 42% price rise that Microsoft stuck on the subscription.
I just spent the last hour on their live chat and am now on 365 Personal Classic. The price is back to the old price, and copilot is gone for good. - cardertep77Jan 16, 2025Copper Contributor
I don't know if people are still struggling with the Copilot icon but this is what worked for me. Open up Microsoft Word and navigate to Options; there should be a tab for Copilot. Click the copilot tab and you should see a box that says enable copilot. Uncheck that tab and the little annoying Copilot icon should be gone forever from your Word documents. Cheers.

Are you on PC? Are you on Microsoft 365 Personal plan? What build number are you using please? Are you referring to options visible in desktop Word or visible in web Word, or both please? Whatever version you have is what I want. I’ve currently reverted to the 365 Personal September 24 build on desktop which does not have Copilot, and what I really want is what I can see on yours - the option to toggle Copilot off and on. Thanks!

I don't have that tab.
- aj2wilsonJan 20, 2025Copper Contributor
Nope - don't have that option

This REALLY works. Amazing how "simple" to repair and so difficult to let the people know. Thank YOU Tunzila, we need MORE people like You.
