Copilot File Downloads Expire Immediately – Error Across App, Browser, and Incognito

Hi, I’m running into a recurring issue when Copilot generates downloadable files. Every time I try to download the file (almost immediately), I get the following error message:

“File unavailable. Generated files expire after a short period. Please regenerate if needed.”

This happens consistently, even when I regenerate the file multiple times.

I’ve tested this in several places and the issue is the same everywhere:

Copilot App
Browser version
Incognito / Private mode

The file appears for a moment, then instantly becomes unavailable. I’m unable to download anything before it expires.

Is this a known issue, and is there a workaround?

I was able to ask Copilot to generate it as a CSV and then it worked fine. The error appears to be Excel-specific

Claude fixed the file in my download, and its working; I was trying to open my saved task html file and it kept opening as a txt. But below is the explanation:

Why this happened in the first place

Windows sometimes appends .txt to files when they're saved via a "Save As" dialog that treats the content as plain text — common when you save from an email attachment preview, a text editor, or when an app doesn't recognize the intended format. The fix is always the same: strip the trailing .txt.

To prevent this in the future

Windows Explorer hides known file extensions by default, which is why the double extension (.html.txt) sometimes goes unnoticed when saving. Turn on visible extensions once and you'll catch it immediately:

File Explorer → View menu (top ribbon) → check "File name extensions"

After that, every file shows its real extension, and if you ever get a .html.txt again you'll spot it before it becomes a mystery.

One more thing

If Chrome still opens the file oddly (e.g., blank page), the file may reference external scripts (Tailwind, Lucide icons — I saw those in the header) that need internet. Should load fine on any connected machine, but if you open it offline, the styling won't render fully.
