How to replace Client Backup with Microsoft 365?

Microsoft 365 Business is recommended as a replacement for Client Backup removed from Windows 2019 Server https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server-essentials/get-started/what-s-new-19.

I've not found any technical details regarding backup in Microsoft 365 Business. I need to backup 4-6 TB and 3 notebooks. I would like to know how backup and restore works with Microsoft 365.

Thanks

  • Hi Seti

M365B doesn't include backup capabilities for client devices. You can get file and settings synchronisation with the ability to restore earlier versions if needed, but it's not a PC backup/restore solution if you want something that allows a bare metal restore. If you still need full device backup for speed of backup and restore reasons, you could look at using backup from within control panel, or optionally look at a third party back up offering if additional capabilities are required.

    regards

    Mark

      Hi Mark,

thanks for information. Microsoft removed Client Backup feature from Windows Server 2019 Essentials and they don't have replacement for it. I'll use Windows Server 2016 Essentials, it's the only suitable replacement for me now.

I've asked Microsoft support today and they have only Azure Backup, SharePoint and OneDrive as backup solutions. And Windows Server 2016 Essentials.

      Regards

      Martin

I know this post is pretty old, but I too am looking for the replacement of 'on premise' backup of client computers as was available with Win server 2012 R2 and 2016.   With the Windows Server Essentials Experience, it provided an on-premise method of backing up client computers with a centralized dashboard that displayed backup status, client security status, and client update status.    This solution is ideal for small businesses.   I haven't found any 3rd party solutions that are as elegant and effective.   Many small businesses have insufficient bandwidth to use cloud services for this purpose (especially if they need to restore an entire drive) so an on-premise solution is ideal.

Has anyone found a solution that is a good replacement for this orphaned MS server product?

I'm finding it challenging to locate detailed technical information about the backup process within Microsoft 365 Business. My specific requirement involves backing up around 4-6 TB of data and three notebooks. I'm eager to understand how the backup and restore mechanisms function within Microsoft 365, as this information is crucial for my data protection strategy. If anyone has insights into the backup features of Microsoft 365 Business, especially for handling larger volumes of data pinterest downloader and multiple devices, I'd greatly appreciate your guidance.

    Hi Seti75,

To replace Client Backup with Microsoft 365, you'll need to use OneDrive for Business and SharePoint for file backup, and rely on Microsoft's built-in security and compliance features. OneDrive tool can handle individual file backups for each notebook, while SharePoint can manage larger data volumes. For system-level backups, consider third-party solutions that integrate with Microsoft 365 for comprehensive backup and restore capabilities. Make sure to regularly check Microsoft's documentation for the latest updates and features.
