Can Office 365 DLP capture items crawled on-premises?

Can the DLP functionality in Office 365 find items stored on-premises that are crawled by a hybrid connected SharePoint 2016 farm? 

If so, does it matter if the crawled item is stored outside of SharePoint 2016 and possibly requires a custom connector in order to be crawled?
