Ok it's all working on my phone now.
- Deleted Intune and all the Microsoft apps
- IT fixed a licensing issue their end
- Reinstalled Intune Company Portal but was still getting a 'you need to update settings for this device' problem
- Tried various things, what seemed to fix it was Enabling Browser Access under Intune settings

Also working on my phone. I did the following:
1. Uninstall Intune app on my phone
2. Install old version suggested earlier in the thread (5.0.5273.0)
3. Complete setup in Intune app (device settings validated)
4. Update Intune app in App Store (otherwise Microsoft apps complain about out-of-date Intune version)
5. Configure my Microsoft apps
6. Done!
