When the files on the File Server are exactly that, and have not been migrated to SP as yet.

StuartK73 Don't you plan to migrate these files to sharepoint?
That way you would have even more granular control.
I also struggled a bit with this and in the end the only solution was to migrate to sharepoint\teams.
Even using azure files you will always have the same problem.
I work for a 3rd Sector / Charity organisation buddy, where the budget for projects / migrations doesn't come easy.
Working through an Intune mig just now.
