Whiteboard storage location?

Hi,

According to this update MC1024395 the storage location for a Whiteboard created in a Teams channel should be the corresponding SharePoint site instead of the initiator's OneDrive. I have checked two tenants but the storage location is still OneDrive, even in new Teams channels.

  • Is this update rolled out? I have checked the news center but I could not find anything usefull.
  • Is there something I can do as an M365 admin?

Kind regards,

Juan

MC1024395 is indeed rolling out, but it's a gradual, tenant-by-tenant rollout that started in late 2024 and continues through 2025. Microsoft typically doesn't provide exact completion dates for these storage migrations. Your observation is correct - many tenants still show Whiteboards in OneDrive even after this announcement.

Verify If Your Tenant Has the Update

    • Check Message Center:
    1. Go to the Microsoft 365 Admin Center.
    2. Navigate to Health > Message Center.
    3. Search for MC1024395 or filter by Whiteboard. If the message shows as "Completed," the update is applied.
    4. Test it

    Actions for M365 Admins

    • Force Sync (If Partial Rollout):
    •           If the update is partially applied, restart Teams or clear the cache:
    •                    Windows: %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams\Cache
    •                    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft/Teams/Cache
    • Configure Retention Policies (Optional):
    •                  To ensure compliance, set retention policies in the SharePoint site associated with the Teams channel.

    Workaround (Until Full Rollout)

    • Manually Move Whiteboards:
    1. After creating a Whiteboard in Teams, open it in the web app.
    2. Use the File menu to Save As and choose the Teams channel’s SharePoint folder.
    • Use SharePoint Integration:
    •        Attach existing SharePoint-stored Whiteboards to Teams posts via the Files tab.
