Remote users can't update Teams on company laptop without admin privileges

We have a number of remote users that have company laptops running Windows 10.  They do not have admin privileges.  Teams is asking to update but they can't without admin privileges.  They connect to the office via VPN.  How can we get Teams to update?

  • Hello, that sounds a bit odd. Teams is installed in the user’s profile and while it does require local permissions it doesn't require admin privileges. Meaning, deploying to the user’s local profile allows the client to be installed without requiring elevated rights.

The Windows client leverages the following locations:

    %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Teams
    %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\TeamsMeetingAddin
    %AppData%\Microsoft\Teams
    %LocalAppData%\SquirrelTemp

Does this happen if they manually "check for updates"? How about if these users just reinstall the client themselves? https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-teams/download-app
