Your understanding is correct. Support for sensitivity labels is coming in the future, as detailed in the documentation: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-ca/Office365/SecurityCompliance/data-loss-prevention-policies#support-for-sensitivity-labels-is-coming

No timeframes have been communicated yet though.
