Changing the retention policy to add deletion

We have a retention policy of 1 year, and "At the end of the retention period" is set to "Do nothing". If we change that to "Delete items automatically", will that cause all the files in Preservation Hold Library that were deleted more than a year ago, to be deleted immediately? Any potential problems we should prepare for if we decide to proceed with the change?
