AppSource Office Add-in update process for users after publishing new manifest

When publishing an updated manifest for a  javascript add-in for Office (in this case Word), what is the experience for a user who installed the old/original version via AppSource and has not yet updated to the newly published version?  Does Word prompt them to update, or would they have to seek out the update themselves?
