o365 public folder migration

Hi All,

I have began a migration from on-prem exchange 2010 to o365 using minimal hybrid method

I need to consider how i'm going to migrate public folders. I refer to two MS docs links below

  • The first article suggests this method should be used when using a cutover or staged method

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/collaboration-exo/public-folders/batch-migration-of-legacy-public-folders

  • The second article references a hybrid setup but fails to mention if this includes the minimal hybrid option

https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/collaboration-exo/public-folders/set-up-legacy-hybrid-public-folders

Can anyone clarify?

Kind regards

In a minimal hybrid (Exchange 2010 → Office 365) setup, public folder coexistence is not supported long term. Minimal hybrid is treated more like a cutover, so Microsoft expects you to use the legacy public folder batch migration method (your first link).

The legacy public folder hybrid approach in the second article applies only to full hybrid deployments, not minimal hybrid.

    In short:

Use batch migration of legacy public folders

Migrate public folders after mailbox migration

Plan for downtime during the final switch

I’ve used EdbMails Exchange Migration software for public folder migration from Exchange to Office 365, and it simplifies the process compared to Microsoft scripts. EdbMails also supports Office 365 to Office 365 public folder migration with detailed reports.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hybrid doesn't really relate to PF migration, the (second) article you are citing is for situations where you want to keep PFs on-premises but enable migrated users to access them. To do an actual migration, follow the steps in the first article, or use a third-party tool, or do it manually by exporting content to PSTs.
