    SuzyQ820 Can't replicate that behavior in Excel for the Web. How does the bottom left-hand corner of the Excel tab (when viewed in your browser)? Mine looks like this:

    I've read some post suggesting that some browsers cause this problem, but I can't verify it. Which one do you use?

    In any way, the suggestions given by Saima14 's AI robot are not going to help you as they do not apply to Excel for the Web.

Thanks for your reply.  Yes it is very frustrating but another reply which suggested it could be the browser seems to have cracked it and I've now got my worksheet tabs back,  thank goodness.  Such a relief! Thanks again for your reply anyway. Suzy

Suzy, Microsoft recently have problems with online services due to issues with WebKit. Workaround is to logout from the account, clean cache and sign-in again. Perhaps that was your case as well.

In general if there are issues with the app opened in browser, try first to repeat in InPrivate (Incognito) session. If works here, clean caches and cookies and try again.
