Sum one column based on text values in another column

First time being here.   I have a sizeable spreadsheet with text values (Names primarily) in Column A with numeric values in column D.  (about 125 columns, about 200 Rows) I want to sum the values ...

    Hi Rob,

     

    Actually, the SUMIF function is all what you need, but you have to use it correctly to get the result you want. See following screenshot:
