mail merge from excel to word

Since updating to OS Catalina on my MacPro, I can't use an Excel worksheet to provide data for a mail merge to a word document. I get the message that it has to be converted, I click it is a safe file, and then the ball starts rolling and nothing ever happens. How can I fix this?
