macro enabled spreadsheets in office 2016 on windows 10 machine dont show drop down lists any more

After upgrading from windows 7 pro to 10 pro macro enabled spreadsheets in excel 2013 have no visible drop down lists etc. They are there when you click on the correct cell and they still work, but they are not visible!
