Linking Sheets without having to have them both open for them to link and stay updated

I know how to link one workbook to another, but how do I do it so I don't have to have the sheet I linked to open for it to update?

If you want to link data between Excel workbooks stored on a hard disk without needing to open both workbooks simultaneously, it's not directly possible with standard Excel functionality. Excel requires access to the source workbook to establish and maintain the links between workbooks.

Linking data between Excel workbooks without having both workbooks open is possible when both workbooks are stored in a shared network location or a cloud storage service that supports real-time collaboration and access, such as:

    1. Network Drive: Both the source and destination workbooks are stored in a shared network folder or drive that is accessible to all users who need to access the files.
    2. SharePoint: If your organization uses Microsoft SharePoint, you can store the Excel workbooks in SharePoint document libraries. SharePoint allows multiple users to access and collaborate on documents simultaneously.
    3. OneDrive: Microsoft OneDrive allows you to store Excel workbooks in the cloud and share them with others. Multiple users can access and edit the same workbook at the same time.
    4. Google Drive: If you prefer using Google Sheets instead of Excel, you can store your spreadsheets in Google Drive. Google Sheets supports real-time collaboration, allowing multiple users to edit the same spreadsheet simultaneously.
    5. Other Cloud Storage Services: Various other cloud storage services, such as Dropbox, Box, and iCloud, also offer similar collaboration features that allow multiple users to access and edit Excel workbooks stored in the cloud.

When Excel workbooks are stored in these types of storage mediums, users can create links between the workbooks without needing to have both workbooks open simultaneously. Each user can access the linked data as long as they have permission to access the source workbook in the shared location. The text and steps were edited with the help of AI.
