How to remove floating Copilot icon?
So far, I know there isn't a way to just hide the icon while keeping Copilot available. To remove it permanently, you generally need to disable the Copilot feature for your account, and the path depends on whether you have a personal or work account.
When You Have a Work Account Managed by IT
If your account is managed by your organization, you often can't disable this on your own because your IT department controls your software licenses.
Since you mentioned your IT department couldn't find the setting, here is the specific path they can check in the Microsoft 365 admin center:
- Sign in to the Microsoft 365 admin center.
- Go to Users > Active users.
- Select your user account.
- Go to the Licenses and apps tab.
- Uncheck the Copilot license and save changes.
This measure removes Copilot from your Office applications and should result in the icon disappearing.
If your organization does not hold a standalone Copilot license, the feature may be included as part of your primary business subscription; this makes it more difficult (I suspect impossible) to disable it without affecting other services.
Temporary Workaround: The "Dock" Option
If you need an immediate but temporary fix, you can minimize the floating icon so it stops covering your spreadsheet cells. Right-click the Copilot icon and select Dock. This will make it smaller and lock it to the corner. However, please know this is only a temporary solution, and the icon will reappear each time you restart Excel.
I know this isn't a one-click fix, and many users have expressed the same wish for a simple "hide" button.
