RHA1705 To freeze both the first row and first column, select cell B2. On the view tab, select "Freeze Panes".
This freezes the rows above and columns towards the left from the active cell.

This solution is no longer accurate. the Freeze Panes menu has changed. Any idea how to do it in the "new and improved" excel web app?

It's still the same in Excel for the Web:
- Select the cell below the row(s) you want to freeze and to the right of the column(s) you want to freeze.
- On the View tab of the ribbon, select Freeze Panes > Freeze at Selection.
In the screenshot below, I have selected cell F4, so rows 1 to 3 and columns A to E will be frozen.
