Excel Online-Splitting Cells

I need to split cells but not for the purpose of inserting formulas or data, but rather for the purpose of splitting a call so that one half or one third of the cell can be a different color for visual presentation purposes. Is this possible? Thank you in advance

    This is not possible I'm afraid. You can format a cell to have a two-color gradient, or format three adjacent cells, but that's as close as you can get. Another option would be to use shapes to overlay on a cell range, but that gets tricky and I'm not sure I'd recommend it.
