Excel locking up every day

I am beyond frustrated with microsoft these days. It worked better in 1999 than now. I don't know if it's a software problem but why am i forced to be online. why can't they sell a stand alone software?

the old excel never locked up and did not allow data entry NOR the ability to save my work after working hard for 10 minutes. AM I to be forced to hit "save" after every data entry? I'm losing all my work regularly and I'm sick to death of this.
