The error message "HTTP Error 400, The size of the request headers is too long" typically occurs when the size of the headers being sent in the HTTP request exceeds the server's limit. This issue commonly arises in web-based applications when there are too many cookies or headers being sent with the request.
To resolve this issue in Excel for the web, you can try the following steps:
- Clear Browser Cache and Cookies: Clearing the cache and cookies in your web browser can help reduce the size of the request headers. This process varies depending on the browser you're using, but typically you can find it in the browser's settings or preferences.
- Reduce Header Size: If your Excel file contains a large number of cookies or headers, try reducing the size by removing unnecessary cookies or headers. This can be done by simplifying your workbook or reducing the amount of data being sent with each request.
- Check for Excel Add-ins or Extensions: Sometimes, browser extensions or add-ins can interfere with the request headers. Try disabling any browser extensions or add-ins that may be affecting Excel for the web.
- Use Incognito Mode or Private Browsing: Try opening Excel for the web in a private browsing window (incognito mode). This will start the browser session with no cookies or cached data, which may help reduce the size of the request headers.
- Update Browser: Ensure that your web browser is up to date. Sometimes, outdated browser versions can cause issues with request headers.
By following these steps, you should be able to mitigate the "HTTP Error 400, The size of the request headers is too long" issue in Excel for the web.
If you continue to experience issues after trying these steps, you may need to provide more details about your specific use case and environment. The text was created with the help of AI.

Did you get anywhere with this, i've seen it intermittantly on 4 machines in the organisation, not using excel for web have cleared cache rebooted repaired excel, performed dism /online /restorehealth /cleanup-image and sfc /scannow... i'm at a loss short of reimaging the which i want to avoid if possible.
I found in another forum suggesting to go into the file menu - then account - then manage settings
remove the tick for turn on all connected experiences and click ok, close excel and try again... I'm waiting for feedback from those instructions.
