Conditional formatting where one date is greater than another date

Hello you lovely people. I am trying to add conditional formatting to a spreadsheet.

Excel 2013

In column F i have a date required, then in column H i have a date expected. I want to highlight the entire row if the expected date is greater than or equal to the date required.

I have tried a simple formula to say if H2 is greater than or equal to F2, format it. However, this shows my naivity in Excel, the whole of column H turns red if the F column has no entry in it's corresponding cell. For example if F7 is empty, H7 is formatted.

I need to apply this to the whole of column H.

Help a novice to improve. Thanks in anticipation.

  • You can use more than 1 rule to the conditional formatting; add one rule that leaves colorless any empty cell.

Thank you Arul. I tried that as the first rule. It was "format any cell that contains" blank cell.

But the whole of column H formats.

Maybe i need to start from scratch?

      I used the embedded conditions.

      Conditional formatting>Highlight Cells Rules>Greater Than.

I then added the other rule for blank cells.

In both cases i had the whole of column H selected to ensure it was not an absolute reference in the formula.

Sometimes I apply the formatting to only 1 cell, then I edit the rules removing $ from the reference, then I copypaste the cell. It should work...
