Cant Insert Picture on Top of or Into Cell

On excel for mac, I have a template that I am changing the information in for a new document. No formatting changes or anything like that. But when I try in insert a saved png file from my computer, it just converts the image to text. I've tried in multiple spots but still the same issue. Version 16.95.1 if that makes a difference.

Also when the document is saved and emailed as an excel file, when someone opens it and it previews in Google Sheets, some of the info has reverted to the old template info but still has the new info mixed in as well. When the file is downloaded and opened in excel everything is correct as it should be.

I am at a loss for both of these issues. Any help would be appreciated.

  • This sounds like Excel is misinterpreting the image insertion as a formula or object reference, may consider below:

Use the “Place in Cell” Option

    • Go to Insert > Pictures > Place in Cell > This Device
    • Select your PNG file and insert it — this should embed the image inside the cell, not float above it

    If no luck

    • Try inserting the image using Insert > Pictures > Picture from File (without “Place in Cell”) and then manually resize and position it
    • Right-click the image and choose Format Picture > Properties, then select Move and size with cells to anchor it properly
