Edge browser crashes after file download / open
Hello,
I am using Edge browser Version 142.0.3595.80 (Official build) (64-bit), on Linux.
When downloading a file , and trying to open the downloaded file from wihin browser, it causes edge browser instances to close. I have been using other browsers to get around the problem.
Is this a known problem, and are there a solution to this problem?
Thanks,
Jay

Hi Kelly,
I tried downloading the beta software you suggested, but the version specified does not seem to be available in for Linux in the beta channel.

Hi Jay - Any version larger than 144.0.3719.18 should have the fix. So you can try Beta 144.0.3719.35.

Hi Kelly,
Thanks for the suggestion. I tried installing the stable version (140.0.3485.54) on Ubuntu 25.04 again, but it wouldn't launch.
I’ve reinstalled version 143.0.3650.96 and will continue using that alongside my other browsers for now.

Jay

Hi Steve,
I was originally using Wayland, but I had to switch to X11 to resolve the issue with being unable to share my screen in Slack.
For now, I’m able to download a file as long as I don’t click or interrupt the download process (no “Save As,” etc.).
Next, I’m going to try the Beta version 144.0.3719.18 and see if it behaves any better.
Thanks,
Jay T.

Hi JayT1185 -
There was an issue when uploading files, which has been fixed in Beta Version 144.0.3719.18. You might be experiencing a different issue, since your issue is occurring when downloading.
Here is a link to the Release Notes: Microsoft Edge release notes for Beta Channel | Microsoft Learn
But one thing to try is updating and seeing if the issue is still reproducing. If the browser is still crashing after updating, can you also please submit diagnostic data through the browser? ("..." menu > Help and feedback > Send feedback). Thanks!

Hi Kelly,
I tried recording and collecting the dignostic, while downloading the file. However the diagnostic window crashes along with the Edge and all windows close and crash (including diagnostics)
Thanks,Jay

Hello Jay!
I have the error (Fedora 42, Edge 143 but started on 142, on Wayland+GNOME) that if I choose "Save" (in the standard destination) or "Open" it works as desired, but when I choose "Save in..." and the file explorer should come up Edge crashes completly. Already posted it here but the moderators never published my entry....
Are you also using Wayland? With kind regards,
Steve
