Is Build 118 (Canary build) broken? The browser will close 1-2 seconds after I open it.
I am using Edge Canary on Windows 11. The build for the browser is 118.0.2059.0. Unfortunately, the browser will automatically close itself 1-2 seconds after it's been opened. I can not even get to settings to try to clear anything. Is it possibly related to the new Edge for Business "functions" that were added? I was able to get Edge to open by renaming the Default folder under my appdata\local\microsoft\edge sxs\user data folder. This allowed Edge to work normally, until I logged back into my work profile and the stored information for that account was loaded into the profile once again. Then it immediately started crashing again.
I suppose it could be related to one of the extensions, but this just started today. So something is really wrong there.

The incredible problem, now, is that my work account was a free trial Azure domain that I created years ago to try some previews of enterprise products etc...
Of course it was abandoned, not paid and just there for eventual learning purposes.
The day I logged into this broken "work/school" domain with Edge Dev and Edge Canary I knew that the rollback is impossible.
It is not only an Edge issue. It is an entire machine issue. Since the main "Tenant" and Global Administrator of the Work School Account is me and the domain has no certificates, no active services, no AD policies, it's an empty container outdated and dangerous. So my Win 11 Pro is full of failed certificates loading errors. E.G. I can't use the Microsoft Editor of my Microsoft 365 Personal (on Edge) because it's linked know to the broken work account that can't activate it (it obviously hangs) on Edge. Microsoft editor works on Chrome, no way to have it working on Edge. A terrible merge of the two accounts that's hard to remove it I'll surely have to reinstall everything from scratch if I not intend to pay Azure (ENTRA ID), register the machine on Intune, then remove any group connected with Microsoft 365 for Business that at the time that I created this "onmicrosoft.com" domain was on trial....
I'm shocked!
I couldn't believe it. And I can't believe it.
I talked with Microsoft by chat and they say that it is all so experimental and for insiders, they don't have any solution.
I hope that my personal account is not compromised even after a Fresh install.
I will avoid to use any OneDrive Backup and and see what happens step by step. - DaniBashCopper Contributor
Hi RORW_WORK ,
Try to delete the old preferences file to avoid this behavior. Maybe is damaged or has any unsoported value that causes this.
The file are called "preferences" and is located in C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge SxS\User Data\Default\
You will not lose your bookmarks, because is stored in another file called bookmarks in the same directory.

- RORW_WORKCopper ContributorMany thanks for the response. I, in fact, did just that when troubleshooting the issue myself. Finding this on Windows was interesting to start, but not too difficult. Finding it on macOS was even more interesting. NOTE: In both cases the folders are normally hidden in the OS.
Once I had renamed my "Default" folders and opened the browser again, it all worked normally. I was able to get the browser to update to the new build "118.0.2068.0". I then went back and deleted the newly created "Default" folder and renamed my old one back to "Default".
Long story short, it worked and now Edge Canary is happy once again. There was just something really bad in that 2060 build that made Edge crash hard.
Just glad they fixed it. - Dennis5mileSilver Contributor
Good Catch Dan! Though I did not delete the Preference file and renamed it, this did work.
Your post needs to be marked as "best"
Again, good catch/callDennis5mile
- Dennis5mileSilver ContributorStill crashing for me. I am currently using this from an InPrivate Window, but if I click on settings or anything else, it crashes..... Can not type anything into the address bar because that causes crash.... I'm surprised I can type here.... I've tried to send in feedback but have no idea if it sent as, as soon as I hit send, browser crashed..... Going to try and post in the feedback hub as I can trace my steps and send diag there.....
Dennis5mile - Paul_H_UKBrass ContributorMine has updated to 2067 this morning and so far it is behaving.
- RORW_WORKCopper ContributorI to got an update to 2067 on both Windows and Mac. This does seem to have fixed the issue. I was surprised that it took so long to address the issue, but this is "ALPHA" stage software. So, have to expect the occasional issue such as this. Would love to know what broke. I suspect it was something to do with profiles as a clean setup with no linked profiles worked in both Windows and macOS.
Again, very odd behavior, but at least it appears to be fixed now.
On a side note: Does anyone else wish they would bring back the solid black theme instead of this ugly grey theme?- Trevor89Copper ContributorI wish they would leave my titlebar alone. it was following my theme colour before but for a few months is been set to black (in dark mode)
I altered the system colour to mean black = inactive so having edge always black is anoying to knwo if a window has focus or not.

I can also confirm that build 2068 now works again.
My solution was to rename "Default" to "Default_" in the sxs folder untill edge updated, then I deleted the temporary non-signed in default and renamed my old folder back, now I have all my open tabs again.

Same problem with browser on my PC - both on Edge Canary (118.0.2060.0 and win build 25936)
- Dennis5mileSilver ContributorGetting same, well almost the same.. Edge will no longer open at all now. I can right click it and choose New InPrivate Window, but that only stays open for a few seconds at best....

Dennis5mile I have the same issue on my Surface Pro 7 now. Opens and closes within a second.
- RORW_WORKCopper ContributorI can now confirm that this issue has to be related to profiles and the "Edge Business" stuff they added. I am now seeing this issue on my Windows 11 and Mac computers. If I rename the "User Data" folder and let it create a new one, it works fine. The moment I try to sign into one of my accounts, it crashes. Something got seriously messed up in 118....
- Paul_H_UKBrass Contributor118 is unusable in all practicality. Even if it stays open rather than closing seconds later, it's gone the moment I type a URL, click on a quick link, or click on a URL.
- WatneyIron ContributorBuild 118 (Canary) is broken for me on Mac OS and Win 11 -- crashes immediately.
- Lestlin_RobinsCopper ContributorI am also experiencing the exact same problem. Only the websites that were already in the browser load. Opening a new tab results in crashing. Also, external links also don't work.
