Usually what is reason for the large 1.5GB RAM usage in Win10?

I have a Win10 question here before it ends on Oct 14.

My "task manager" show RAM is 1.5GB in use / 2 GB full.

But I did not run/install any apps. The computer "idealpad 110" is quite new.

Usually what is the reason for the 1.5GB RAM usage?

Thanks a lot.

  • hi LYoung_NY2023 its totally normal ,Windows 10 itself tends to sit around 1.3–1.6 GB RAM usage even when you haven’t opened anything. A big chunk of that goes to background services, drivers, Windows Defender, and system caching so things load faster later.

Basically, your PC isn’t “doing nothing” — it’s just keeping the essentials ready in memory.

With 2 GB RAM, that’s about as lean as Windows 10 can get. If you start multitasking or open a few browser tabs, it’ll hit the limit fast. If you can, upgrading to 4 GB or 8 GB will make a world of difference.

You can check under Task Manager → Processes → Memory to see exactly what’s using it, but what you’re seeing sounds completely expected.

Hello Surya_Narayana , thanks so much for your replies.

Usually what could I do to let Win10 use only a minimum RAM but not run with full OS functions?

Which apps/tasks can I end in my "task manager" to reduce the RAM in use?

1.5 GB RAM use is quite normal for Windows 10 — it keeps background services ready for faster response.

        To reduce it a bit:

Disable unneeded startup apps (Task Manager → Startup).

Turn off unused background apps (Settings → Privacy → Background apps).

Set performance to “Best Performance” in System Properties.

Avoid ending system tasks — it can cause instability. For older PCs, adding more RAM gives the biggest improvement.
