Windows App - RDP channel crashes when printing on a redirected canon printer
Hey team,
I would like to know, if anyone else struggles with the following scenario:
A canon printer is installed on a local client.
The user is working in the AVD environment.
The printers are redirected into the AVD-Session via "printer redirect".
Since the users are migrating to the new "Windows App", the AVD session breaks as soon as the user is printing on a redirected Canon-Printer.
When printing on another printer, there is no issue.
Also: With the "Microsoft-Remotedesktop" Application, everything works as it should.
A Microsoft ticket is already raised.
I would like to know if there are other environments, which are encountering the same issue.

Hi sberens ChrisDub
Were you able to resolve this problem?
We've been having this for some time now, and so far no definitive solution has been found.
Searching other forums we are not the only one with this problem. And it seems to have start somewhere towards the end of 2025 for us we think. But users only started reporting it much much later.- sberensCopper Contributor
We have not so yesterday our Azure MSP put in a ticket to Microsoft and we are now waiting for a response.
Our Customer has gone back to the MSI installed Remote Desktop client even though it's no longer supported until we get a response/fix from MS.

We're seeing the same behavior with a client who's trying to migrate to the Windows app before the MSI-based Remote Desktop client sunset deadline (2026-03-27).
- The soon to be sunset MSI installed Remote Desktop client prints without issue and performing the same print operation through the Windows app crashes the Windows app.
- Client reconnects and sees their AVD session is exactly where it was, but nothing came to their printer. Attempting to print again yields the same result, Windows app crash.
- Client has tried resetting as well as reinstalling the Windows app, and has also tried changing a number of printer settings but nothing helps except using the MSI Remote Desktop client.
- Client is on Windows 11 and the AVD Session Host they're connecting to is a Windows 11 multi-session host, the app they're printing from is presented to them in RemoteApp mode (not a full desktop).
- Clients printer is a Canon MF743Cdw and printing to a non-Canon printer works as expected.
Looking in the client's Event Viewer we can see an Application Error gets logged:

Hi Kidd_Ip
thanks for sharing your insight.
Since we're also affected, could you let us know if you have gathered any additional observations from the environments where you saw this issue?
In particular:
– Were there any patterns or conditions that seemed to trigger the crashes more consistently?
– Have you or others come across any temporary workarounds that helped stabilize printing until Microsoft provides a fix?
Any further details you can share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
The issue involving Canon printers causing RDP channel crashes within the new Windows App for Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) has been observed across multiple environments. While Microsoft provides official documentation on printer redirection under the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP).
