an error occurred while accessing this resource

When trying to connect to a remote desktop connection in the Remote Desktop client app i get "an error occurred while accessing this resource."

trying from browser (https://client.wvd.microsoft.com/arm/webclient/index.html) is less helpful:

  • I have full owner RBAC on azure as well as the Desktop Virtualization User role
  • i can login to the servers
  • No specific ad join configuration:

worth noting, if were to just use RDP to remote onto the server and not use AVD, i have to connect using an azure VPN and login with on-prem AD credentials. When i sign into the AVD platform i am using my entraID credentials.

How does your NSG rules look inbound and outbound for the subnet that your AVD session hosts are attached to? it's attached to AZ firewall. if i connect to VPN and then launch rdp i can connect to the session host. If i connect to vpn and launch remote desktop connection from remote desktop app or browser it shows error still. If it were issue with nsg then i would not be able to connect using rdp.

Also like Kidd_lp mentions, it is worth validating it is not a conditional access policy blocking your access to the backend services. The account is excluded from CA.

Are you trying to connect to an avd session host or are you trying to use mstsc to connect to an other Azurevm? the session host is essentially a jumpbox. Open remote desktop app, click the remote desktop connection icon and then it should just launch mstsc on the session host for me to connect to another vm.

all other suggestions from Kidd_lp i already did before logging this case.

Are you trying to connect to an avd session host or are you trying to use mstsc to connect to an other Azure vm?

  • How about try to fix by below?

    • Check Account Permissions: Ensure that your account has the necessary permissions for accessing the remote resource. You mentioned having full owner RBAC on Azure and the Desktop Virtualization User role, but double-checking can't hurt.
    • Use InPrivate Browser: Sometimes, using an InPrivate or incognito browser window can help resolve authentication issues. Try accessing the Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD) platform using an InPrivate browser window.
    • Clear Browser Cache: Clear your browser cache and cookies, then try accessing the AVD platform again.
    • Check Conditional Access Policies: Ensure that your Conditional Access policies are not blocking your access. Sometimes, policies can prevent access to certain resources.
    • Re-register Azure VPN: Since you mentioned needing to use an Azure VPN to connect using on-prem AD credentials, ensure that your VPN client is correctly configured. You can follow the steps to configure the Azure VPN Client for Microsoft Entra ID authentication.
