Purview Retain and Delete Policy

Both types of policies work together. Only the Exchange/MRM ones allow you to target specific folders, so there is still valid use scenario for such. But if you also have a mailbox-wide "retain" policy configured in Purview, it will also have effect - the principles of retention dictate that "retain" always wins over "delete". So even if items in Deleted items/Sent items are purged (moved to the RecoverableItems subtree), they will be kept for the duration defined in the Purview "retain" policy.
Thankyou very much for this information. It would be really good if could exclude specific folders in the mail-wide retention policy wouldn't it.
